How to Upgrade to VMware vCenter 7 and vSAN 7

After delivering the appliance, we received a short introduction about the history of VxRAIL and the different types that are available. After that obligatory introduction, it was time race against time phrase to get technical. We were given the installation guide and a presentation on the installation wizard that we would need to execute. In fact, there is the possibility to upload all the parameters with a JSON file or to follow a wizard and entering all the settings.

That being said, we got to work and installed the appliance in our rack and connected all the cables. To keep it simple, we used the default VLANs that were proposed by the installation guide. So time to boot the thing and to get started on the deployment right… think again.

Those damn demo appliances As the installation guide instructed, we tried to connect to the VxRAIL manager default ip address only to find out it was not responding. The possible causes why that is are limitless so one of the first thing I did was to take take with a grain of salt idiom a look in our DHCP server. First hurdle, what is the username and password to get in. Luckey they were pretty default and easy to guess, I was in. Unfortunately, this password was not easy to guess.

So it turned out that the appliance was already configured by somebody that got the appliance before and it was not reset to factory default. Reverse engineering the setup The first thing to do is to get in the ESXi without knowing the root password.

No official procedure here from VMware so this is what I did. I used a kali linux distribution I happened to have stored on my hard drive.

Look for a disk with multiple partitions on it and the partition you are looking for will probably be the second one with ID number 5 that is MB in size. You can log in by using username root and a blanco password.

Now I was able to change the management ip and to set a new password. Now I had to repeat those steps with the three other nodes and on to the next problem. All virtual machines were greyed out and my vSAN storage was not available. Something was wrong with the network setup so I wanted to look at the network setup of the ESXi host. These were using distributed switches which you would configure from the vcenter server. In my case, the vcenter server is a virtual appliance running on the vSAN.

So I had to turn to another unsupported trick, getting the distributed switch configuration from the filesystem. The port id can be found using esxcfg-vswitch —list, this will translate a port ID to the vmkernel name and that can be found in the vSphere client. So I changed my switch configuration accordingly and sure enough, my vSAN storage was online and I could start the virtual machines.

But I was still not there as the vcenter appliance also had a password that I did not know. Breaking in to vcenter For this there is a supported method from VMware to reset the vcenter root password. That is, if you have the grub password to change the boot settings when the system starts.

Again I was out of luck, the password was not the default one. As you would have guessed by now, no official support here so I had to mount my linux distribution once again. Now reboot the server. In my next post I will go over the installation and tests that were done. Share this:.

I assume the above statement applicable when the ESXi host which is no more in the network and not managed by vCenter Server. Reinstalling ESXi host will lose local datastoreevery configuration settings of ESXi hosts such as networking, storage and so on.

There are few other ways where you can reset ESXi host without losing the host configuration. You can configure one ESXi host with all the settings as per your enterprise standard and extract the profile from a host. This extracted profile will act as a blueprint and can apply to another ESXi hosts to maintain a consistent configuration across ESXi hosts in your infrastructure and also saves a lot of time in the confguring ESXi host after the build.

Select the ESXi host from which you want to extract all the settings from. Click Next. Specify the name and description for the host profile. As for the first run, there are only a few minor changes. As mentioned above, that will allow for us to assign the Management VLAN tag during the first run, instead of having to run commands against each node prior to the first run.

Now, on the final password screen, we will define the password for that account.

    Hacking your VxRAIL

A few things to note with the msytic account and the password associated with it. After my system validated, I started the build: The build itself is mostly the same, but I did notice there are a few more tasks that have been added in 4.

The build takes about the same amount of time, but on a properly configured system that has validated, you can just let it run in the background.

    1. Between us speaking, in my opinion, it is obvious. I would not wish to develop this theme.

    2. Willingly I accept. In my opinion, it is actual, I will take part in discussion. I know, that together we can come to a right answer.
