Pinterest Whether you run a big farm or a small one, having a functioning tractor can be invaluable. Unfortunately, as with anything that has an engine, occasionally it breaks down. You can hire a mechanic to come out to your farm and repair it, or you can pay to have your tractor towed to a repair shop.

Both of these options can be expensive, though. To save a little money, why not try troubleshooting your engine problems yourself? Identify the Type of Tractor First, take a look at your tractor. Does it run on diesel fuel or gasoline? While it can save you money on fuel, gasoline tractor engines tend to be more complicated and have more parts that can break down. The most common cause for the engine not turning over is simply the battery.

Inspect your battery terminals and cables, and test the battery. First, check the fuel filter and the fuel lines running from the tank to the engine. Cleaning or replacing your fuel filter is often all you need to clear out the obstruction. The other fuel-related problem could be the fuel control lever on the engine itself. First, determine why it is jammed. If it still moves, consider spraying down the moving parts with lubricating oil to get it moving again.

If your engine starts dying after a moment, it could mean there is something else in your fuel. Gasoline and diesel ignite in two different ways — diesel ignites under compression, so when the piston compresses the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder, it automatically ignites. Gasoline requires an additional spark to ignite — hence the addition of spark plugs in gasoline engines. This is going to sound odd but … go sniff your fuel tank.

Diesel fuel and gasoline have two very different odors. So if you smell gas in your diesel tank, you need to drain it and flush out the fuel system before refilling it with diesel fuel.

Problem — The Engine Is Overheating Engine overheats are almost exclusively a problem with the cooling system. First, a warning: Do not ever try to open your radiator cap when the engine is hot. The coolant gets pressurized, in addition to being very hot, and can send your cap flying while scalding you with hot steam.

Next, make sure your radiator actually has coolant in it.

Troubleshoot New Holland hydrostatic transmission problems Hydrostatic transmissions include mechanical parts such as a differential and a drive axle, plus rubber or metal hoses the liquid is pushed through.

Failure of any mechanical component, a broken hose, or clogged filter will cause tractor hydrostatic transmission problems. But the most common issue will be the oil itself. Note that, while temperature affects viscosity, the right oil has enough range to operate in any reasonable weather. Here are some basic troubleshooting tips to fix your hydrostatic transmission lawn tractor problem fast! Zero-Turn Mowers: Purge Your Hydraulic Drive System Zero turn hydrostatic transmission problems can start with air in the system, a condition known as cavitation.

This is pretty common in zero-turn mower transmissions. NOTE: If your mower or tractor has a transmission that must be removed for service, be sure to purge after it is serviced and before you use it. Park the mower on level ground, set the parking brake, and put the rear on jackstands.

Make sure the oil reservoir is properly filled according to specs. Disengage the transmission check your operators manual to see how this is done. Sit in the operators seat and start the engine. With the engine running, move throttle control to slow position. Push motion control levers forward all the way and hold for five seconds. Pull motion control levers to full reverse position and hold for five seconds. Repeat steps 6 and 7 three times. This purges any air from the hydraulic transmission system.

Put the control levers in neutral N. Shut the engine off and set the parking brake. Check the oil and top off if necessary.

Engage transmission. Remove from jackstands, start the engine, and disengage the brake. Move control levers forward and roll about 5 feet. Then slowly reverse about the same distance. Return the levers to neutral and repeat this steps three times. The air is purged from your system and your zero-turn mower is ready for action.

Start with a complete visual check of the hydraulic system. Check the oil level and add oil if needed. Inspect the hoses and connections for damage or signs of leaks. Clean pump cooling fins with a rag, brush, or compressed air, and check for damage. If there are no signs of fluid leaks or damage, it may be time to change your hydraulic and steering fluids. Their service department should be able to ask the right questions, give suggestions, and you can make an appointment for service if necessary.

Replacing all the filters tends to solve the problem, but a longer-term fix is to make sure on-farm storage is up to scratch. If old or poorly stored liquid is put into the system, the tank will need to be drained and refilled with fresh.

The box has six speeds in three ranges — low, medium, high — and it is possible for these range packs to give up the ghost. Accessing the packs involves taking the wheels off, jacking up the cab, removing the diesel tank and hydraulic pump, dropping the back-end oil and removing a number of wiring looms.

The tractor can be split, giving access to the relevant pack. It can then be removed, rebuilt and refitted. If the pack just needs new plates, the parts bill is fairly modest. However, if the shaft holding it has been damaged, the price starts to rise.

The biggest cost is labour, as it takes three to four days to do. Continuously variable transmission accumulators If speed changes in the continuously variable transmission are jerky, it could be down to the accumulator. Mr Morgan recently fitted one on a New Holland T7. If it still moves, consider spraying down the moving parts with lubricating oil to get it moving again.

The machine holds its value well. It is a robust, powerful and hard-working tractor. It is my first compact tractor and I am very happy with it so far. So far it has worked well leveling my driveway, mowing the patio, removing stumps, hauling brush, and moving logs and boards.

I love my little TC It has been a great tractor and its performance has been fabulous.

How Can You Troubleshoot a New Holland Tractor?

I bought it with the front loader, sand harrow, box cutter, hole digger, field mower and recently bought a rear cutter. My only regret is that I did not purchase the rear hoe attachment at the time. We have a little horse farm and this little guy is more than up to the task. My neighbors have 5 acres too and are often amazed at what this thing can do. I bought this tractor primarily for snow removal, but it has also worked great for digging and grading work for construction projects.

I am satisfied with its performance so far. A couple of dislikes: I have the hydraulic static transmission and there is no cruise control.

This should be standard equipment with the hydro. Occasionally it will not start unless you move the gear selector a little until it starts. He has done everything I have asked him to do so far.

Massey Ferguson Tractors are better than New Holland Tractors

I bought a foreclosed home on 20 acres and decided to do some logging and clearing in the forest. It was close to crashing, so I went to rent a tractor for a day. They are very poor for snow and ice. Traction is marginal, and the front steering is very poor.

I am currently looking for a chain set. The local dealer has been very helpful. I bought the used snow blower there.
