Her artistic practice concentrates on the intersection of art, science and the environment, and she is committed to the pressing problem of climate change. Her exhibition at American University is a timely exhibition that demonstrates that artists can push for change by voicing concerns through their work.

    I first interviewed Diane Burko for Artblog in March of , where we learned of her upcoming exhibition at American University. This article is written after viewing that exhibition and builds on the interview. Her show is a presentation of the work related to climate change that she produced in many different media from ; it is curated by two well-known feminist scholars, Mary Garrard and Norma Broude.

    There is an excellent catalog, which is available to read in PDF format for free on the website for the show. Visitors also can purchase a hard copy at the gallery. In addition to notes on the painting process by Burko and essays by the curators, it includes an essay by environmentalist Bill McKibben who has written extensively on the impact of global warming. There are several videos on the website as well, with one a virtual gallery discussion with the artist and curators.

    It is important to understand that Burko began her painting career in abstraction, moving later to observational painting based on landscape. Her essay examines the idea of the sublime, connecting it to the catastrophic landscape tradition when artists depicted snowstorms and avalanches and the forces of uncontrollable nature. She places Burko in this lineage but observes that in the present day it is impossible to experience those types of scenes without a realistic fear about the effects of global warming.

    McKibbben writes that Burko is one of the earliest of the now vast number of artists who put voice and image to the issue of the warming planet. Burko has been fascinated with enormous geographic spaces for many years, but her engagement with the climate emerged at the turn of the century.

    By , she connected her images of the land to activism. The body of work on view at American University is part of a year-long series of events around the topic. Burko will only install her work if institutions agree to this type of programming. The cross-over between anti-war, feminism, and concern for the earth can be documented in the careers of many women artists who emerged in the s. While Burko was not an environmental activist until later, her attraction to grand geological vistas began in the s and became a part of her photographs and paintings in this period.

    Like him, she has travelled extensively, visiting and documenting the geographic wonders of the world. Her paintings are beautiful, a term often seen as a pejorative, but when describing the vast natural spaces of the earth, which are themselves magnificent, it seems fitting that the works match the spaces themselves.

    Burko not only uses her own photographs from her many travels, such as those from her first visit to Iceland in , where she observed both volcanoes and waterfalls, but she also works from scientific photographs and maps. In fact, mapping informs much of the works in the exhibition, though she does not reproduce maps, but rather interprets them artistically.

These images also demonstrate her tremendous painting skills, where she is accomplished in both abstraction and representation. MAPS Anabolic helps keep this counterintuitive lesson at the front of my mind. Like many of you, I always fall into the trap of trying to add and do more.

    More sets, more weight, more reps, more days in the gym. More is not necessary! More is actually worse in most cases! MAPS Anabolic always serves to simplify my training life. Every time I run through it, I find myself wishing it were different in a few key ways. Here are the main ones and hey, Mind Pump guys, please fix these! They replaced the valuable spoken, real-time coaching cues with written graphics giving multiple cues all at one time. Those cues are not on the screen long enough. And instead of someone actually coaching the movements, they have this terribly annoying music playing on a loop instead.

Hey guys, please go back to being in the videos and live coaching yourselves! They put so much effort into the rest of the course. Come on guys, you can do better than this! And based on all of that, here are my top tips on getting the best possible results from this program. Stick to the program exactly as written.

    At least your first time through. Just do the program. Trust me on this one! The best results will come if you are in a slight caloric surplus. Even if your long-term goal is to lose weight, run the program in a surplus. You can go back to a deficit afterward. Pay attention to the prescribed tempo and rest periods. They are a vital part of the results and something that too many people overlook and ignore. Do not lift to failure!

    Lift a weight that you can lift with perfect form for the prescribed reps. Holy crap, is this a game-changer. Use the given exercise regressions where needed. The program includes regressions for the more challenging exercises. Use them! New and experienced lifters alike can and will benefit from it.

    In other words, your muscles and you are adaptation machines. Knowing how to manipulate and promote that adaptation is the key to great programming. You do not need a full gym to use this program although you can because it is written for both types of setups! What is a trigger session, and do I really need to do them? Doing trigger sessions three times per day on your off days will help maintain the muscle-building signal sent to your body by your primary training days.

    Running MAPS Anabolic with the trigger sessions will produce noticeably better results than doing it without! If you stick to the prescribed rest periods, you can complete each strength workout in under an hour. The trigger sessions should only take minutes each, 3x per day.     Trust me on this one! BUT I feel like I was still sending muscle building signals because I coach at least 1 class a day typically moreso through all of the exercise demos during class. I feel like I was still doing as much as the prescribed trigger session. I always ended each session with some 5 minute of light stretching or foam rolling mostly foam rolling.

    Goals My goal going into the program was really just to get stronger and see the impact a strictly resistance training focused program could have. I was not trying to lose weight, but gain muscle mass if anything.

    Body Fat Down 2. Lost fat everywhere Both arms and legs, but most notable was around my trunk area: Pros: My upper body got WAY stronger. Like noticeably so. I lost body fat everywhere — but mostly around my trunk area. My workouts were never longer than 1 hour, typically a little shorter.

    My workouts were less frequent, so more time to get other shit done in my life. My workouts were challenging but not overly strenuous. Confidence booster — both in the gym and outside of the gym. Cons: Would have liked more lower body work — it felt very heavy on the upper body work, which definitely paid off though.
